Monika Cassel

Monika Cassel is a poet, translator, and educator living in Portland, Oregon. Born in Ithaca, NY to a German mother and an American father, she was raised in the United States and Germany. Her poetry has appeared in The Laurel Review, Phoebe, Construction, and the Vassar Review. Her translations have appeared in Asymptote, Guernica, Michigan Quarterly Review, and Poetry, among others. She was named a finalist for Construction’s poetry contest and received a Regional Arts and Culture Council Grant; her translation work has been recognized by a Travel Fellowship from the American Literary Translators Association and an invitation to JUNIVERS, a workshop for translators of German poetry sponsored by the Toledo-Programm. As a founding faculty member and former Chair of Creative Writing and Literature at New Mexico School for the Arts in Santa Fe, she developed a creative writing program for the school with the support of the Lannan Foundation.
